Federal Assistance for Owners, Trainers and Staff
The Randwick Trainers Association is very pleased with the announcement today of a relief package for those affected by the outbreak of Equine Influenza. It is very thankful of the efforts of Peter V’Landys in pressing the claims of the thoroughbred industry and it now gives our members and their owners some financial respite from the effects of the outbreak. It now remains for the State Government to realize the folly of the Papal celebrations going ahead at Randwick in July of next year and relocating them to an alternate venue that has no material impact on any industry in NSW. Randwick trainers will have only just returned to racing following the E.I. outbreak when preparations for the Papal festivities will see them potentially turfed out by the State Government and the Catholic Church. The Federal Liberal government, who get little if any direct benefit from racing in NSW, have lived up to their obligations but the State Labour government, who take billions from the industry, offer no help at all and are working hard at compromising racing in this state again.   more...

Randwick Trainers Association media release
Randwick trainers met this morning to discuss the challenges that the current Equine Influenza outbreak has presented to each of us. There was a general consensus that we needed to maintain a high level of care for the horses while they are suffering the effects of E.I. and also put our owners in a position to be back at the races with their horses as soon as is possible after the resumption of racing in NSW. In order for this to be done there was an acknowledgement of the need to maintain our skilled workforce at its present levels. In light of these goals it was agreed that all trainers would maintain their fees at the current levels so as to be able to maintain their respective workforces and be ready for a resumption of racing at the earliest possible moment. The recently announced reductions in charges from the AJC were well received and Randwick trainers thank the AJC committee for their help at this crucial time. This relief will go some way towards replacing the prize money component of a trainer’s income that is used to subsidise the day rates charged out to our owners.   more...
