Duporth ready for Newmarket
Blinkers and a familiarisation trial have Duporth primed for the Group One Newmarket Handicap at Flemington.

Trainer Anthony Cummings said Tuesday’s hit-out on the famous straight six course was integral to Dupoth’s chances in the $1 million sprint.

“I think it’s vital (to have a look at the straight),” he said.

“Just the fact that he did get lost in the first part of it and wanted to lay in back towards the inside fence shows that.

“It will be his first start in blinkers which will sharpen him up for the race up the straight.”

Gun apprentice Nick Hall has been entrusted with the Duporth ride.

Hall rode Red Lord for the stable when the stayer raced in last year’s Melbourne Cup.

Cummings said Duporth wasn’t suited on a rain-affected track when the colt resumed in the Royal Sovereign Stakes.

“He loomed up but he was never happy in the ground,” he said. “His condition gave out over the last 100 metres but he’ll be sharp enough to mix it with them in the Newmarket.”
