Solo Flyer stamped his claim for autumn carnival riches with a sterling first-up at Randwick.
Racing for the first time since last year’s AJC Australian Derby, Solo Flyer scored a half-length win in the St Patrick’s 14 March Raceday Handicap (1200m).
“Right throughout his career he has always raced well first-up,” James Cummings said.
Solo Flyer was ridden aggressively by 3kg claiming apprentice Jamie Quinnell as the field headed for home.
Quinnell was able to pinch a break on Solo Flyer’s rivals and despite getting tired over the final stages, the four-year-old had enough in hand.
Solo Flyer was Group One-placed in the Champagne Stakes as a two-year-old and was a weight-for-age placegetter as an early season three-year-old.
James says a return to racing’s elite level is on the cards.
“I think Dad (Anthony Cummings) might look at a race like the George Ryder Stakes with him,” he said.
Solo Flyer missed the spring carnival because of a knee problem which surfaced after finishing midfield in the AJC Australian Derby.
