Zavite has confirmed what Anthony Cummings knew all along – that he was born to be a two-miler.
The no-nonsense stayer continued a hot streak in feature staying races when he cruised home to win the $400,000 Group Three Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville.
But Cummings is already making plans to ensure Zavite’s latest campaign, which includes cup wins in three States, isn’t over.
“He better be ready for some more racing yet,” Cummings said. “He's heading back for the Sydney Cup now.
“We'll look at running him in the BMW between now and the Sydney Cup.”
Zavite was having his first attempt at racing over 3200m but aided by an outstanding Nash Rawiller, the six-year-old held a 2-1/2-length winning margin.
The result was never in doubt as Zavite settled perfectly close to the speed before taking control soon as the field entered the home straight.
“It was an excellent ride,” Cummings said of Rawiller’s navigational skills.
“He had him in the right spot and got him going when we had planned. Everything went as we wanted it.”
Cummings said from the time he purchased Zavite as a yearling he had ambitions to run him over two miles.
“I basically bought him to win a Melbourne Cup. Things went wrong last year, it was supposed to be his year. But it didn't work out,” he said.
