AJC Australian Derby day preview
Talented galloper Duporth will spearhead the stable’s AJC Australian Derby day representation at Randwick.

In what might seem on paper to be an unconventional preparation, Duporth lines up in the $350,000 Group I The Coffey Projects Galaxy (1100m).

The three-year-old takes his place against Australia’s best handicap sprinters after finishing midfield against his own age in the Phar Lap Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill on March 21.

To ensure Duporth will be at his sharpest for the Galaxy, trainer Anthony Cummings gave the galloper a stable leave pass.

“I sent him to the paddock for a few days to freshen up and it seems to have worked,” Cummings said.

“His demeanor when he arrived back at the stable was completely different.”

Duporth’s attitude has been reflected in his trackwork, pleasing Cummings during Tuesday’s Breakfast with the Stars session at Randwick.

“I liked the way he stretched out during his work … he did it comfortably,” Cummings said.

Miss Darcey, meanwhile, will be given her chance to pay for an AJC Australian Oaks start.

The filly will run in the $125,000 Group III Cargo Bar Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) – a traditional AJC lead-up to the Oaks.

She was also nominated for the Carbine Club Stakes but Cummings will give the Hussonet filly another chance to prove her staying credentials.

“I reckon the 2000 metres is the right way to go,” he said.
