Solo Flyer ready for Doncaster Mile tilt
The disappointment of a near-miss 12 months ago will soon be forgotten if Solo Flyer can turn a perfect campaign into a memorable one by winning the $2 million Doncaster Mile.

Solo Flyer is unbeaten in three starts since resuming and he muscled his way into the Doncaster field after winning the Ajax Stakes.

The four-year-old will be on a mission of redemption for trainer Anthony Cummings after Casino Prince’s narrow defeat in 2008.

Rated a tragedy beaten, Casino Prince took many lengths of the winner Triple Honour before going down by a half neck.

"The closest I have come to winning a Doncaster was last year and I think Solo Flyer can go one better," Cummings said.

"They are two different types of horses, Casino Prince was proven at weight-for-age and carried a decent weight (55kg).

“Solo Flyer has snuck under the radar to some extent because he missed the spring carnival.

“But right from his two-year-old days he has always been a horse to be reckoned with. You don’t run placings in races like the Champagne Stakes if you haven’t got something to offer.”

Solo Flyer rounded off his Doncaster preparation in an exhibition gallop with Takeover Target at Randwick last Saturday. The workout received mixed reviews but Cummings isn’t fazed.

“He didn’t have the blinkers on and he usually does only what he wants to do in his gallops,” Cummings said.

“On raceday he’s a different horse. He’s shown that he’s got a real competitive streak.”

Solo Flyer has drawn the middle of the field in barrier nine and is rated a $14 chance.
