Top trainer Anthony Cummings received the perfect tonic after his stable recorded a double at Wednesday’s meeting run on the Kensington track at Randwick.
Cummings underwent hip surgery early in the week and it was left to son and stable foreman Edward to oversee the stable’s team at the meeting.
Spirit Of Destiny took out the Happy Birthday Gai Rating 80 Handicap over 1550 metres to remain unbeaten this time in after winning his maiden at Hawkesbury at his previous start.
The son of Pentire sat back off the speed before sustaining a strong run for jockey Glyn Schofield to get home by a half head.
The stable closed out the day in terrific fashion after Motivation showed plenty of fight to record an all-the-way win in the National Leisure and Gaming Handicap (1300m).
Ridden by Blake Shinn, the son of Redoute’s Choice hung off the track in the closing stages but had three quarters of a length in hand over the Kevin Moses-trained Gold Mount.
“With the way the track was racing I decided the front was the place for him to be in the run,” Shinn said. “It wasn’t by design he ended up so far off the fence but he got the job done.
“He was pretty gutsy in the last little bit. He might be able to win some better races.”
The Anthony Cummings team performed well at Wednesday’s meeting with Sister Madly, a half-sister to the Hong Kong superstar Silent Witness, making a strong debut when third in the opening event.
The four-year-old daughter of Choisir, Messenger, made a terrific start to her campaign but getting home strongly despite a chequered passage along the inside in the Michael O’Loughlin Gift (1150m).
