Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper Greg Carpenter has penalised Red Lord a half kilogram for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups after his win in Saturday’s Group III Naturalism Stakes (2000m).
Red Lord became exempt from the Caulfield Cup ballot after his Naturalism win, the penalty taking the Anthony Cummings-trained galloper’s weight in both Cups to 51.5kg.
“The Naturalism was a breakthrough win for Red Lord, his first at Group level,” Carpenter said.
“With the penalty he now meets the runner-up Light Vision on half a kilo worse terms in the Caulfield Cup and most of his other rivals from Saturday’s race on similar terms.”
Red Lord isn't qualified for the Melbourne Cup, needing to finish in the first eight in the Caulfield Cup to cement his spot in Australia’s great race.
No horse has ever completed the Naturalism Stakes / Caulfield Cup double with Douro Valley coming closest in 2007 with 51kg after incurring the same penalty as Red Lord for his Naturalism Stakes win.
